Dr. Yunfei Yuan received his medical degree from Zhongshan (Sun
Yat-sen) Medical College, Guangzhou, PR CHINA in 1983. From 1983 to
1986, He got his resident and research training in Institute of
Hematology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Tianjin, PR China.
Dr Yuan entered the same university for his postgraduate study in
1986 and got his Master of Medicine in 1989. Since then he pursued a
surgical fellowship in abdominal oncology and held a position of
attending surgeon in surgical oncology in Department of Abdominal
Oncology in this cancer center in 1991. He moved up to the rank of
an Associate Professor in Department of Hepatobiliary Oncology of
this institute in 1997. Dr. Yuan is the author/co–author of over 30
publications and 2 book chapters.
Dr. Yuan’s clinical practice and research focuses on hepatic and
biliary malignancies. In Sep 2003, he began to perform orthotopic
liver transplantation to treat patients with hepatocellular
carcinoma and finished 19 cases until Sep 2004 without any operative
mortality. He is also skillful at hepatectomy, including left
(right) hemi hepatectomy or trisegmentectomy and two-step
hepatectomy, and pancreatoduodenectomy. He performs transcatheter
hepatic artery chemoembolization. He is the pioneer in PR China to
evaluate the hepatic functional reserve for patients with
hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with one parameter, retention rate of
Indocyanine Green at 15 minutes (ICGR15), which help to decrease the
morbidity of hepatic failure after hepatectomy or chemoembolization
(Chinese Journal of Oncology, 1996, 17:377 ). He introduced the
concept of high dose (>20ml) Lipiodol in the chemoembolization for
patients with HCC. It means when patients hepatic functional reserve
is good (ICGR15<10%), we might use high dose of embolization agent
(e.g. Lipiodol) to kill HCC cells as much as possible without
hepatic failure (Chinese Journal of Cancer 1997, 16:358).
Recommended by Ministry of Health of CHINA, Dr Yuan got World Health
Organization Fellowship in 1998(Ref: CHN NCD 001 FEL/2691/98). He
worked in Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) from August 1998 to July
2000 and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDA) from August 2000 to
August 2001 as visiting scholar, both in Houston, Texas, USA. He got
training in tumor molecular biology and cancer gene therapy, as well
as in clinics of hepatic and biliary carcinoma. His research was
focused on epigenetics and hunting the metastasis-relating genes in
prostate cancer in BCM. He found that hypermethylation of CpG
islands is the mechanism by which SYK is silenced in breast cancer
and re-expression of SYK by inhibition of DNA methylation suppresses
breast cancer cell invasiveness in MDA.
After Dr. Yuan returned to Sun Yat-sen university, his research was
focused on epigentics of hepatocellular carcinoma. Currently, he got
research grants with nearly 1 million RMB. There are 4 postgraduate
students and 1 technician in his research group.
