Located in the city of Guangzhou, Cancer center of Sun Yat-sen University was founded in the year 1964 and includes the cancer hospital and cancer research institute. After 40 years of continuous joint effort by the successive leaders and the staffs, the center now holds the glory of being the largest institution for prevention and treatment of cancer in Southern China incorporating medical services, clinical teaching, research and disease prevention. The center has been entertaining patients from many Southeast Asian countries and China as a whole. Every year it recruits about 120 university graduates including the candidates for masters and Ph.D. degrees. Besides, it is appointed as one-year tumor specialist training center by the Ministry of Health of China. The centre is designated as the key subject of Guangdong province in 1999 and as the key subject of China in 2001. There are National Clinical Study Center for Anticancer Drugs and State Key Laboratory of Oncology in Southern China in the centre. Now the center is also WHO collaborative center on cancer research.
The Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University holds the pride of being the biggest specialty hospital of cancer in Southern China. The center now has become a modern medical service provider with about 1100 in-patient beds and over 1500 staff members with more than 200 senior specialists. The Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University is also one of the earliest research institutes for cancer research in China. The institute lays great emphasis on prevention and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma from the aspects of epidemiology, pathology, immunology and molecular biology and has achieved noted accomplishments.
The center has 43 Ph.D. degree supervisors and many young and energetic specialists who make up the pioneer of the center. Since 1983, a lot of research projects have been supported by National Science and Technology Plan, National Excellent Young fund, National 863 plan, National 973 plan, National Natural Science Fund, American CMB Fund etc. Meanwhile, Laboratory of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma was identified as Guangdong key laboratory whereas department of medical oncology was identified as national drug research center for clinical trials. Low melting point lead technique and conformal radiothapeutic technique invented firstly by our center have broadly been used in radiotherapy. The drug sensitivity test in vivo and in vitro suitable for individual chemotherapy and the study of anti-radiation drugs have also shown perfect efficacy.
The center owns a VIP in-patient department which provides especial medical service for the patients all over the world. In the last more than 10 years, the VIP department has attended 60, 000 patients from HK, Macao, Taiwan and 33 countries.
